Michael VIII Palaeologus, with Andronicus II, 1261-1282. Trachy (Silver, 24 mm, 1.66 g, 6 h), commemorating the coronation of Andronicus II in 1272, Thessalonica. [O/Є/Φ/Δ/Γ/O] ΓωP(ligatured)/Γ/O/C/Π St. George, nimbate, standing facing, in military attire, holding spear in his right hand and shield in his left. Rev. Archangel Michael standing facing, flanked by M - X, placing his hands gently on the heads of Michael VIII, kneeling facing on the left, and of Andronicus II, kneeling facing on the right. LHS 97 (2006), 224 = DOC 36 = SB 2321 (same reverse die). Of the highest rarity, one of only three known examples. Brushed and with a large flan crack, otherwise, very fine.
